CHILD Leader Recognized as “Woman of Distinction”

Dr. Alexis Tibbetts, Superintendent of Okaloosa County Schools, Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, was honored by the Girl Scout Council of the Florida Panhandle at a gala dinner on March 11 at the Duval Hotel in Tallahassee. Dr. Tibbetts was selected as the winner in the Education category. The Women of Distinction are recognized in a variety of categories for their professional leadership and community activism.

The Woman of the Year Diamond Award went to Susan Story, President & CEO of Gulf Power Company, Pensacola, Florida. Ms. Story was also recently appointed to the Florida Board of Education by Governor Charlie Crist.

“It was an honor to be in the company of such outstanding women leaders,” said Dr. Sally Butzin who attended the gala with Peter Butzin, ISI board member. “Alexis Tibbetts truly deserves this award for courageous leadership to bring new innovations to Okaloosa County, especially in these challenging economic times.” Okaloosa County uses Project CHILD as a turn-around model for low performing students in eight of the district’s elementary schools. http://www.okaloosaschools.com

ISI Partners with Leaders in Education and

Business for Exciting i3 Grant Opportunity

The Institute for School Innovation has formed an alliance with successful Project CHILD implementing districts, compatible educational organizations, and technology business partners to compete for a federal i3 (Invest in What Works and Innovation) grant. ISI will apply for a Validation Grant of up to $30M to enhance and develop Project CHILD into a comprehensive model to turn around low performing schools. The main goal is to improve academic achievement for high need students.

The alliance will meet for a strategy session on March 31 at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel, Atlanta Airport. For more information, contact ISI at staff@ifsi.org.

One of “25 Women You Need to Know”

The Tallahassee Democrat newspaper honors community leaders during March as a tribute to Women’s History Month. This year, ISI’s Executive Director, Dr. Sally Butzin was selected. Pam Ridley, President of the Zonta Club of Tallahassee, nominated Dr. Butzin noting that “she’s dedicated to her beliefs…If she sees something wrong she tries to change it.”
