Project CHILD principals, assistant principals, coaches, and coordinators attended the annual summer Leadership Academy in Lake Mary, Florida on June 17-18. ISI staff and members of the newly formed Leadership Advisory Council presented an array of topics that promoted thoughtful discussion and generated new ideas.

The CHILD Leadership Advisory Council consists of the following CHILD principals: Rob Carroll, Mark Dugan, Gale Fulford, Justin Matthews, and Linda Terranova. Topics included “Connecting Project CHILD to 21st Century Skills; Becoming an Effective CHILD Leader; Creating a Positive School Culture; Advocating for and Sustaining the CHILD Model; and Making AYP through Differentiation using CHILD.”

Principal Rob Carroll and Assistant Principal Crissy Sandefur shared an exciting innovation at South Heights Elementary School called “Project College.” Every student visits a different college campus each year from kindergarten through fifth grade. Click here to see the presentation slides and photos of the staff and students at the various colleges. Teachers are connecting this experience to Project CHILD by creating a “College Station” in each classroom for students to learn about college expectations and set goals to make it happen.

“Almost all of our students at South Heights in Henderson, Kentucky live in poverty and have limited visions and expectations of ever attending college,” said Mr. Carroll. “Project College is giving them a chance to experience a world beyond their limited view so they can reach higher and aspire to share in the American dream.” Click here to learn more about South Heights Elementary School.

  • Chamberlain Elementary - New Britain, Connecticut

U.S. Congressman Allen Boyd accepted ISI’s invitation to visit Imagine School at Evening Rose in Tallahassee to learn more about Project CHILD and ISI’s $30M i3 (Invest in Innovation) federal grant proposal. Congressman Boyd toured classrooms, interacted with students, and talked to teachers. He liked what he saw.

“We hope that Mr. Boyd and our U.S. senators will help promote our grant proposal to enhance and expand Project CHILD,” said Dr. Sally Butzin, ISI Executive Director. “Project CHILD 3.0 has the potential to truly transform education and turn around low performing schools. It will also create jobs and prevent expensive failure.”

Finalists for the i3 grants will be notified in late July. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” said Dr. Butzin. Click here for the abstract of the Project CHILD 3.0 grant proposal.

Senator Stephen R. Wise was recognized as the 2010 CHILD Champion for Change at the CHILD National Conference held in Tampa April 16-17. Since Senator Wise could not attend the conference to receive his award, ISI Executive Director Sally Butzin and ISI Board Member Peter Butzin delivered the award in person to the senator’s Jacksonville office on June 11.

“Steve Wise has been a true champion for Project CHILD through the years,” said Dr. Butzin. “He has been an advocate for education innovation, and is not afraid to speak truth to power. He has stood up for Project CHILD when others have tried to knock us down. I will always be grateful to him for that.”
